Gum and Bone Disease

Periodontics in dentistry is focused on the supporting structures around the tooth, such as gums, bone and connective tissues as well as the illnesses and diseases associated with these areas of your mouth. At AXIS Dental Group, we have a Periodontist on staff that specializes in periodontics.

How Gum Disease Starts

The bacteria in our mouth along with mucus and other particles, constantly form a sticky, colorless plaque on teeth. Brushing and flossing helps to get rid of plaque. Plaque that is not removed can harden and form tartar. Only a dentist or dental hygienist can remove tartar, using special instruments.

Gingivitis

The longer plaque and tartar are on teeth, the more harmful they become. Bacteria causes inflammation of the gums, which is called gingivitis. Gingivitis causes the gums to become red, swollen and bleed easily. Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease that is reversible with daily brushing and flossing, and regular cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist.

Periodontitis

When gingivitis is not treated, it can advance to the next stage, which is periodontitis, infection of the gums and bone around the teeth. A person with periodontitis may not be aware of their gums pulling away from the teeth and spaces forming, called pockets that become infected. Periodontitis is an infection that does not have initial symptoms of pain. The body’s immune system fights the bacteria as the plaque spreads and grows below the gum line. Bacterial toxins and the body’s natural response to infection start to break down the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place. If not treated, the bones, gums, and tissue that support the teeth will be destroyed. This is not reversible. The teeth may eventually become loose and have to be removed.
